With the changes to the building regulations and the Health and Safety regulations it is difficult for a company director/manager or a self employed tradesman to keep pace with their responsibilities.
Did you know?
Following the changes to health and safety law it is now the companies’ responsibility to ensure they make themselves aware of the safety regulations and follow them!
Statutory instrument 440 means the installer must be registered with HETAS as a competent person or ensure that building control approval is in place before any work on solid fuel chimneys, fireplaces or appliance installation is carried out!
All personnel working at heights must be trained to do so before they commence work!
Approved document J of the Building Regulations requires testing and reporting on chimneys prior to them being put into, or brought back into, use!
In this day and age, can you afford not to ensure the safety of yourself, your employees and your customers?

Sure Fire Technical Services
, as specialist consultants in solid fuel and heating, have put together a series of training courses and services especially for you, utilising some of the recognised experts in their field. Each course will provide a full certificate that is recognised by the appropriate body such as: HETAS ( Heating Equipment Testing and Approvals scheme); NACE (National Association of Chimney Engineers); HSE and Wöhler (CCTV equipment manufacturers).

HETAS engineers training course
HETAS engineers training course
A majority of the courses are held centrally on the Nottinghamshire/Derbyshire border just a few minutes from the M1, but, in an attempt to make it easier for the delegates, agreements have been reached with some of the leading solid fuel appliance manufacturers to use their training facilities to spread the courses further afield.
TESTIMONIAL - Yesterday my colleague and myself completed a HETAS awareness course at Villager Stoves in Axminster. I would like to take the opportunity to complement your company on the course content and the way the course was run. The tuition material was more than adequate for the completion of the course, and will serve as very useful reference material in future for the conduct of our company’s business. The course tutor, Melvyn Bull, was clearly an expert in the field of solid fuel and proved an excellent instructor. I am, at this time, unsure of result of the examination but hopeful for success.

HETAS Solid Fuel Competent Persons Courses
The following HETAS courses are all designed and approved by HETAS and available from Sure Fire Technical Services, either pre-arranged or specially provided for a group or company at any location throughout the UK. The courses will be for a maximum of 16 delegates to ensure each delegate has the opportunity to ask questions and gain the most out of each course, while enabling a wide range of delegate experience and knowledge to be present on each course.

There is a HETAS provided examination on each course and the successful completion of this will be a major component in the delegates’ application for HETAS competent persons status under the building regulations.

* NEW COURSE * - Factory Made Metal Chimney Course - £160 + vat
This course is held in the fully independent, purpose built, Sure Fire Training Centre ensuring that it is not biased towards any single product and is intended to enable the delegate to assess all products and their installation instructions in relation to Building Regulations and the new standards. In recent times the original British Standards on the manufacture and installation of this type off chimney have been withdrawn and replaced by new European Normative Standards. BS 4543 – 1990 (1996) part 2 has been replaced by BS EN 1856-1:2003 (this is regarding the manufacture and testing of the chimney) while the British Standard on the installation of these chimneys - BS 7566 – 1992 parts 1-4 have been replaced with the new BS EN 15287-1:2007 Chimney – Design installation and commissioning of chimneys - for non-roomsealed heating appliances. These new standards change the way we consider this type of chimney and this new course is designed to inform the delegate of the changes, give advice on their implementation and some practical design exercises. In the new training centre there are chimney and chimney components that allow the illustration of the principles as well as enable the delegate to identify possible faults and improvements.
* NEW COURSE * - Bpec Unvented domestic hot water storage systems (part G3) (£160.00 +vat)
The training consists of a one-day course which covers both training and assessments. There are two
different courses on offer, covering the Regulations in England/Wales and Scotland, respectively.
The cost of the training materials will cover both the training manual, the assessments and the BPEC
Unvented Hot Water Storage Systems certificate and competency card (photo ID).
The training course is aimed at practising plumbers and heating engineers who already have a
knowledge of the fundamental requirements of hot and cold water systems and central heating systems,
or students who are nearing completion of a plumbing and heating vocational qualification at Level 3.
By undertaking training in Unvested Hot Water Storage Systems, you no longer need to contact your
local Building Control Officer to approve your work. You will be recognised as being competent to
design, install, service and maintain Unvested Systems and can therefore self-certify your work.
* NEW COURSE * - Bpec – Solar Course (£300.00 +vat)
The BPEC course has been developed in conjunction with the Solar Trade Association (STA), the UK trade
association for solar water heating systems. The course is aimed at already qualified or experienced
domestic heating engineers and plumbers. The course usually takes approximately 2-3 days to complete including theory, practical and assessment. The course provides the knowledge on how to install a solar
domestic hot water system. The course takes into consideration the majority of systems installed in the UK investigating the different system configurations, components and operating characteristics. The course targets aspects which are particular to solar domestic hot water systems giving operatives the confidence to select, install and maintain systems. The course is not intended for those without any experience of heating or plumbing installation experience.
* NEW COURSE * - Working at Heights (£180.00 +vat)
Since May 2005 any one that works of ground must have a ticket to say they have been trained to do so and can use all the equipment they need safely. With this in Mind Sure Fire Technical Services Ltd have teamed up with Ability International (a major supplier of ladder, scaffold and harnesses etc. to provide a full training course that is geared to those engineers who work at heights.
The course covers: Ladders and steps; Tower scaffold; Roof access platforms; Specialist chimney access platforms; Fall arrest equipment.
The company provide a full range of equipment to see and use on the day and with the new facilities, which includes a full 8m eaves height, this can all be done indoors.
* NEW COURSES * - Appliance installation courses - Practical.
These courses are held in the fully independent, purpose built, Sure Fire Training Centre ensuring that it is not biased towards any single product and is intended to enable the delegate to gain experience in a safe and supervised environment before going into the field and fitting appliances in some ones house. It is not possible to ensure all “in the field situations” are covered but with experienced supervisors on site, additional
information can be given during the day. Each course will include a preliminary discussion of the aims and objectives of the course, the regulations that apply to the work being undertaken, the testing of the flues and on the health and safety implications of the work. It has been agreed with HETAS that any installation carried out on this course can be used to form a part of the delegates’ portfolio for their HETAS registration (a certificate of completion will be issued to enable proof to be provided to HETAS)
Open Fire (£199.00 +vat)
In this instance, the installation of a British Standard fire back and fire surround is carried out in one of the two chimneys and fireplace recess that have been constructed in the training centre. This not only gets the delegate used to handling the materials and equipment but also enables them to gain insight into the mixes used and the work involved The work will be carried out in no more than paired teams (though up to four delegates can be on each course. Additional discussions will take place regarding the other types of open fires on the market to extend the delegates knowledge and experience.
Freestanding stoves (£199.00 +vat)
There are a number of stoves on site, any of which can be installed either top out let or rear outlet, and can be fitted into one of the two chimneys built on site with the intension of assessing the chimney suitability for any of the appliances chosen to fit.
NOTE: This course does not cover the lining of flues with flexiblestainless steel liners, as this is a separate course.
* NEW COURSE * - Flexible stainless steel flue lining for solid fuels (£199.00 +vat)
This is the first time in the UK that a practical course on the subject will include the actual installation
of the flue lining into a brick chimney. This course will include looking at varying makes of flue liner and their installation instructions to assess the variations that exist. The delegates will install a 5 m length of lining into a brick chimney that has been constructed with a corbelled offset. The front of the chimney has been left exposed to enable the installer to see if any damage has been done during the installation and the final lining will be tested with a pressure tester to ensure its full compliance. It has been agreed with HETAS that any installation carried out on this course can be used to form a part of the delegates’ portfolio for their HETAS registration (a certificate of completion will be issued to enable proof to be provided to HETAS)
